Climate & Energy Justice

Friends of the Earth are actively working with frontline communities around the country to resist the spread of the nuclear, coal and gas industry, and to protect forests - our beautiful carbon sinks - from further devastation. We are also supporting communities transitioning away from fossil fuels and logging industries to create environmentally and socially just solutions.

Historically, our climate justice campaigns have forged the agenda on the human rights dimensions of climate change. We have supported the rights of those at risk of climate-induced displacement as well as exposing the social impacts of carbon offset schemes in countries of the global south.

Friends of the Earth believe it is essential to address the social issues, such as disproportionate use of resources, inequality, and colonisation, while responding to climate change.

Climate & energy justice vision

  • Limit the greenhouse gas concentration level in the atmosphere to be safe for all life on planet earth.
  • Work in genuine collaboration with and be lead by first Australians in a process of de-colonisation of the economy, especially around mining issues.
  • Ensure that nuclear energy is not seen as a solution to climate change.
Ensure that an inclusive renewable energy future is created, primarily based on community owned and operated power.
  • Reshape economic systems so they acknowledge ecological limits, prevent dangerous climate change, and build resilience to the impacts that are already locked in.
  • Ensure that no-one is left behind when dealing with climate change.

Our work on Climate Justice

Friends of the Earth believe that the radioactive racism of the nuclear industry in Australia must be stopped. We work with First Nations and front line communities to resist all parts of the nuclear cycle: mining, nuclear power, nuclear waste, and nuclear weapons.

Friends of the Earth have worked for over forty years researching, educating and actively campaigning on nuclear issues. We aim to protect people and the environment from damage by the nuclear industry and promote safe, clean and sustainable energy solutions.

Friends of the Earth believe that the banks, superannuation funds and governments that have custody of our money should use it to protect not damage our environment.

Our Market Forces work exposes the institutions that are financing environmentally destructive projects and help Australians hold these institutions accountable. We work with the community to prevent investment in projects that would harm the environment and drive global warming.
